about

On their new single "What A Time", Good Night Gold Dust's Laura Schultz repeats the phrase "What a time to be born / What a time to be alive" in a quiet, understated voice as a barrage of synthesizers, brass, and percussion explodes all around her. Produced in their home studio in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, "What A Time" finds GNGD grappling with the anxiety and uncertainty of the novel coronavirus ("gymnasiums turned into to hospitals/while we all wait up") and ruminating on dream-like memories of the time before quarantine ("you dropped me off for ice cream socials with the/boys who were out of high school/we were ruined there/and taught the worst things about ourselves"). Bursting with the frenetic energy of a year rife with illness, racial injustice, and political turmoil, "What A Time" is a requiem for the end of one world as we hope for the start of a new, better world.

lyrics

You told me once
You told me a thousand times
The Golden Gate
You’re half asleep in the sun
And it’s all around you
No one has to see this
It’s gymnasiums turned into hospitals
While we all wait up

What a time to be born what a time to be alive
While each of us are lost this time

We’re all flawed
I lost your lucky dime
you dropped me off
for ice cream socials
with the boys who were out of high school
we were ruined there and taught the worst things about ourselves

we fixed our jealousy and we are their age now

you dust this off
you tell me it’s in my head

What a time to be a live oh what a time
